New Residential Home Sales Rise 3.3 Percent in April

Rate trends 9.9 percent above April 2011.


The residential housing market continues to nudge itself uphill with the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau and HUD. Sales of new single-family houses in April 2012 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 343,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

This is 3.3 percent (±12.3%)* above the revised March rate of 332,000 and is 9.9 percent (±14.7%)* above the April 2011 estimate of 312,000.

The median sales price of new houses sold in April 2012 was $235,700; the average sales price was $282,600. The seasonally adjusted estimate of new houses for sale at the end of April was 146,000. This represents a supply of 5.1 months at the current sales rate.

Total new homes sold in the U.S. were:

  • 2009: 375,000
  • 2010: 323,000
  • 2011: 306,000
  • Q1, 2012: 83,000
